Childern's Sermon “Jacob’s Ladder”
Genesis 28:10-19a “Jacob’s Ladder”
The twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Esau, did not get along. Jacob had tricked Esau a couple of times and took the elder son Esau’s inheritance and blessing from his father Isaac. After their father Isaac died, the Bible says, “Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, ‘The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.’ Jacob’s mother Rebekah warned Jacob. Jacob fled to his mother’s brother Laban. On the way the story we read in Genesis 28:10-19a happened. As he slept on the stone, Jacob dreamed that there was a long ladder set up on earth to reach into heaven. Do you remember what was going up and down the ladder? (Yes, angels!) The angels of God were going up and down the ladder. And then the Lord God stood by Jacob in the dream and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land of which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring….” God promised to go with you. Jacob woke up from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place – and I did not know it!” Jacob had a dream that earth and heaven were connected by a ladder. Have you ever climbed up a ladder to get higher or gone down a ladder to get lower? Jacob saw angels going up and down the ladder. So, earth and heaven are connected. God and angels from heaven are always able to come to us. Now you know the story of Jacob’s ladder.
